Classic Vanilla Cupcake Frosting
A good vanilla cupcake frosting recipe never goes out of style. Keep these recipes handy when you've got to whip up a quick dessert.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered or confectioners' sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 to 3 tablespoons milk
Directions:
Step 1: In a large bowl, beat the butter and gradually add powdered sugar.
Step 2: Add in vanilla and milk. Beat until desired consistency. (You may need to add a bit more milk.)
Makes approximately 4-1/2 cups of frosting.
Vanilla Frosting from Magnolia's Chocolate Cupcake Recipe

Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) softened unsalted butter
- 6 - 8 cups powdered or confectioner's sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tsps vanilla extract
- food coloring of your choice *optional
Directions:
Step 1: In a large bowl, mix butter with four cups of powdered or confectioner's sugar.
Step 2: Beat 3 - 5 minutes with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and smooth.
Step 3: Gradually add remaining sugar one cup at a time mixing well between additions. You may need to add less sugar to maintain spreading consistency.
Step 4: Add food coloring if desired. Mix well.

Frosting Tip: Keep in mind that butter easily softens at room temperature especially if you are working with the ingredients quite a bit. Try to ice your cupcakes as quickly as possible to maintain frosting consistency.
