Snowflake Cupcakes

Difficulty Level: Experienced

These winter snowflake cupcakes are so easy to put together, you’ll have plenty of time to get all your holiday chores done. Chocolate provides a nice color contrast to the soft blue icing, but you can use any cupcake recipe you like. This design was inspired by Glory from Glorious Treats — a cupcake and cookie decorator extraordinaire!

Bakery/Cake Goods needed:
  • Your favorite batch of chocolate cupcakes
  • Your favorite Butter Cream Frosting tinted Blue (we used Wilton's paste icing color in Royal Blue)
Snowflake Decorating Supplies:
  • 1 recipe royal icing
(you can use your own favorite recipe or check out the one below*)
  • Clean Icing Bags
  • Bag Coupler and Icing Tip #4
  • Snowflake template
(you can make your own, or use our template)
  • Wax Paper
Cupcake Icing Tools
  • 1M Metal Icing Tip
  • Icing Bag
Finishing Touches
  • Brown Cupcake Liners OR Christmas themed cupcake wrapper
Directions for making the snowflakes:

Step 1: Load your icing bag with royal icing. Be sure you are using a clean bag or a bag that you have not used for regular icing. Oil or grease breaks down royal icing and it will not maintain its consistency. Attach the bag coupler and #3 icing tube. Make sure those two items are grease free as well.

Step 2: You can pipe your snowflake freehand or you can use a template. (Download our free snowflake template here.) Tape the template to the table, and place wax paper over the top. Trace the lines with the royal icing. Let icing dry completely.

Directions for Icing the Snowflake Cupcakes:

Step 1: Fill the icing bag with blue butter cream and fit the opening with a 1M tip.

Step 2: Using a circular motion, squeeze out icing to cover the top of the cupcakes.

Step 3: Place the snowflakes on your cupcakes. You can vary the number from one to two. You can also vary the sizes.

Directions Finishing Touches:

If you've already baked your cupcake in a brown liner, you are set to go. You can also embellish your cupcake with a fun Christmas themed cupcake wrapper you purchased or made yourself.
