Lady Bug Cupcakes

Lady Bug Cupcakes

You’ll know that spring is in the air when you see these precious lady bug cupcakes gracing your party table. The bright red lady bug bodies are the perfect accent on these fun spring time cupcakes. Our inspiration for this design came to us from the Crafty Penguin. You can vary the look by mixing and matching the lady bugs and daisies. A mixture of both cupcakes together definitely looks wonderful!

Bakery/Cake Goods Needed:

  • Your favorite batch of chocolate cupcakes
  • Your favorite butter cream frosting recipe

Lady Bug Decorating Supplies:

  • 1 small batch of premade fondant
(you can use homemade or store bought)
  • Pre-made batch of black tinted fondant
(we used Duff Goldman's Buttercream Fondant in Black)
  • Metal circle-shaped cutter
(we used the medium 1" circle cutter from Wilton’s Round Fondant Cut-outs)
  • Red, Green and Yellow Food Coloring
(we used Wilton’s paste food coloring)
  • Butter Knife
  • Small Daisy Flower Petal Cutter
  • Small Rolling Pin
  • Wax Paper
  • Toothpicks
  • Granulated Sugar tinted yellow
  • Food-safe paint brush

Cupcake Icing Tools:

  • Wilton 233 Multi-Opening Tip
  • Icing Coupler and Ring
  • Icing Bag

Finishing Touches:

  • Brown Cupcake Liners

Making the Lady Bugs:

Step 1: Break off a ball of black fondant. Using the rolling pin, roll it out on a flat surface to 1/4" thickness. With the 1" round cutter, cut out two black circles. Set aside.

Step 2: Break off a medium ball of fondant and tint it red. On a flat surface, roll the fondant out to 1/8" thickness. Using the 1" round cutter, cut out a circle. With the butter knife, cut out a small V-shaped notch on one end of the red circle. Next, score the fondant from the pointy tip of the triangle notch you just cut out to the opposite end of the circle.

Step 3: Place the red fondant circle on top of one of the black fondant circles. Turn the red circle around so the point of the V-shaped notch is facing you.

Step 4: Position the 1" metal cutter about 1/2" from the edge and press down cutting through the red and black fondant. Set aside the notched red circle that now has a cresent cut from it as well as the black crescent. (Return remaining pieces back to their original fondant color balls to be reused.)

Step 5: Using a food-safe paint brush, dampen the back of the red notched and scored fondant circle and lay it on top of the remaining uncut black circle.

Step 6: Dampen the back of the black eye-shaped crescent and place it in the opening in the red fondant of the same shape. Press down lightly on all the pieces to ensure they adhere to each other.

Step 7: Break off six small pieces of black fondant and roll into balls. Place them randomly on the wings of the lady bug. Set aside lady bugs on wax paper to dry.

Making the Daisies:

Step 1: Using the rolling pin, roll out the white fondant on a flat surface. With the large daisy cutter, cut out flower shapes.

Step 2: Break off a small amount of white fondant and tint it yellow. Break the yellow fondant into smaller pieces and roll them into balls. Place the balls on toothpicks and dampen with a little water. Dip balls into yellow tinted sugar.

Step 3: Dampen the center of the daisy and press the yellow ball into the center. Set aside on wax paper to dry.

Icing and Decorating the Cupcakes:

Step 1: Tint the butter cream green. Fit the opening of a pastry bag with the the icing coupler and attach the #233 Multi-Opening tip. Fill the icing bag with green butter cream.

Step 2: Starting from the outside, pipe tufts of grass in a circular pattern until you fill the entire top of the cupcake with grass.

Step 3: Place a daisy and lady bug on the tops of each cupcake.
