Daffodil Cupcake Flower Tutorial

The daffodil featured prominently in the cake decorations for the Royal Wedding in April 2011. Learn how to make this elegant flower yourself with gum paste and a few simple tools to create your own stunning cupcake designs.
Tools and Supplies:
- 1 small batch of fondant, leave it white
- 1 small batch of gum paste
(we used Wilton's Ready-to-Use Gum Paste in white)
- Ivory Paste Food Coloring (we used Wilton brand)
- Small Rolling Pin
- Daffodil Floral Petal Cutter
- Shaping foam
- Floral Petal Pattern tool
- Ball & Veining tool
- Fondant stylus or shaping tip
- Pearlized flower stamens
- Flower former cups
- Food-safe paint brush
- Gum Paste Glue* (see below)
Directions:
Step 1: Roll out the ivory tinted 50/50 mix to a 1/8” thickness. Using three-leafed daffodil petal cutter, cut out two flower shapes. Place petal on a shaping sponge. Using the ball end of the ball and veining tool, roll it on the edges of the petal (half on the petal and half on the sponge) to ruffle the petal. Repeat with second petal.
Step 2: Place petal on the flower vein former to give the petal some texture. Press down firmly in order to make an impression into the fondant/gumpaste mixture. Repeat this step with the second petal.
Step 3: Place the first petal into a cupped flower former. Dab a little gumpaste glue in the center of the petal and place the second petal on top. Press down firmly in the center so both petals adhere to one another.
Step 4: Break off a small ball of 50/50 mix. Using the ball end of the ball and veining tool, form the fondant mixture around ball to create a cup. Using the fondant stylus, drag it across the inside surface of the cup you formed to create texture.
Step 5: Dab a little gumpaste glue in the center of the daffodil petals that are setting up in the flower former and attach your cup. Create an indent in the center of the daffodil cup. Fold your flower stamen in half, dip one end in gumpaste glue and press into the center of the daffodil. Allow flower to dry completely.
*Gum Paste Glue
