Little Star Baby Shower Cupcakes
Difficulty Level: Experienced
Twinkle, Twinkle, little star…bring these cleverly designed baby shower cupcakes to the next mom-to-be gathering you attend and everyone will definitely wish upon a star for more. You make the moon and stars out of fondant dipped in colorful sugars. The cupcakes baked in light blue liners set the backdrop for your pastel colored shapes. If you have extra time, pipe light cream filling into the centers of the cupcakes for an extra dreamy effect.
Bakery/Cake Goods needed:- Your favorite batch of yellow cupcakes
- Your favorite Butter Cream Frosting tinted light blue (we used Wilton paste color in Blue)
Moon Decorating Supplies:
- 1 small batch of fondant dividing into five sections. Leave one section white and tint the rest yellow, lavender, pink and green
(we used Wilton paste food colors)
- 1 medium round cutter about 1” in diameter
(you can find something suitable around your home, make your own template or use the open end of a large icing tip)
- Mini Star cookie cutters
- Small Rolling Pin
- Various colored sugars or make your own pink, lavender and green
- Blue Food Writer Pen
- Small Food-safe Paint Brush
- Small knife
- Wax Paper
Cupcake Icing Tools- 1M Star Icing Tip
- Icing Bags
Finishing Touches- Light Blue Cupcake Liners
Directions for making the Moon:
Step 1: Roll out the yellow fondant on a flat surface. You can use wax paper underneath if you need to.
Step 2: You can either cut a moon free hand or use a round cutter. If using a round cutter, after cutting a circle, move the cutter over the round shape to cut into a crescent. Set aside cut outs on wax paper to dry slightly.
Step 3: With the food writer, draw on a smile and eye. Roll a small ball of yellow fondant to form the nose. Roll out a small amount of pink fondant and cut a small circle. The opening of a drinking straw is the right size. Using the paint brush, dampen the end of the smile with water and attach the pink circle.
Directions for making the Stars:
Step 1: Roll out the other colors of fondant and cut various sizes of stars. Set the cut outs aside on wax paper to harden and slightly dry.
Step 2: When the stars are stiff enough to handle, fill an icing bag with buttercream and fit the opening with a #3 icing tip. Pipe a white outline along the edges of the stars. Dip the star edges in various colored sugars. Set aside to dry completely.
Directions for making the text plaques:
Step 1: Roll out the white fondant on a flat surface. Cut into strips about 2” long. Finish the ends of the strips by cutting into a dove tail. Set these aside to dry completely, preferably over night.
Step 2: With the black food writer pen, write out “Twinkle, twinkle…” on one fondant plaque; and “Little star…” on the next fondant plaque.
Directions for Icing and Decorating the Baby Shower Cupcakes:
Step 1: Fill the icing bags with blue Butter Cream and fit the opening with a 1M tip. Using a figure “8” swirling motion, squeeze out icing to cover the top of the cupcakes.
Step 2: Place the fondant moon on one cupcake and dot with stars. Place stars on other cupcakes and vary the location and size. Carefully place the fondant plaques.
